BELKYRA®

What Is BELKYRA?

BELKYRA is an injectable product made from an active ingredient called deoxycholic acid. Produced naturally by the liver, deoxycholic acid is used by the body to break down fats from the foods we eat.

When this chemical is isolated and injected into areas of unwanted fat under the chin, called submental fat, it breaks down the fat and enables it to be effectively filtered out of the body through natural metabolic processes. The fat disappears gradually in the weeks following the procedure, leaving behind a sleeker chin and neck contour.

What Can BELKYRA Do for You?

BELKYRA is a nonsurgical option for reducing a double chin and is suitable for most patients. Previously, some people who wanted to reduce fat in this area relied on surgical liposuction. Liposuction remains one of the best options for patients who want more extensive results along the jawline. However, people who do not wish to undergo surgery can see excellent improvements to their profiles with nonsurgical BELKYRA injections.

A good candidate for BELKYRA has neck and chin skin that is elastic, meaning it will “bounce back” after the underlying fat is reduced. People with looser skin can benefit from our Venus Legacy^™ skin tightening treatments or be better candidates for a surgical neck lift.

Your BELKYRA Treatment

Prior to the procedure, you and Dr. Mosher will discuss your aesthetic goals and expectations for your “double chin” injection at our office in Metro Vancouver. You will also have your medical history reviewed and be examined by Dr. Mosher. If he determines BELKYRA is right for you, you can undergo your first treatment at the same appointment or schedule another session.

When it’s time for treatment, Dr. Mosher first cleanses your skin. He then charts out your injection sites, marking a grid in the areas where fat has accumulated. The area is then cooled with an ice pack, or in some cases, a topical anesthetic cream is applied. Each injection lasts only a moment. In total, the treatment session lasts about 1 hour. Immediately following your treatment, you can return to your usual activities, although we recommend that you not exercise until the following day.

Soreness, redness, and swelling are common but typically short-lived. In most cases, patients require a series of 2 to 4 treatments to achieve the best results, and up to 6 treatments are possible. These treatments are spaced about a month apart. Although your ultimate results won’t be apparent until after your final treatment, you’ll most likely begin to see improvements as soon as a few weeks after your first injection.
