Chin Enhancement

Many people are born with a less-defined or “weak” chin, and others experience chin recession as they age. In any case, a lack of definition in the chin area can contribute to features that look out of balance, a disproportional profile, or an appearance of a “double” chin. Chin enhancement with facial fillers is a relatively straightforward procedure to bring out the chin, creating more of a distinction between the neck and jaw, and a sense of balance among the features.

Chin Implants

In some instances chin augmentation, or augmentation mentoplasty, is recommended to make the chin more prominent and to create balance and harmony among the facial features. It is often performed in conjunction with face lift or neck lift or liposuction of the neck and chin to create a more defined, youthful jaw line. The chin is enhanced by the insertion of a small implant, creating a more balanced profile and facial structure. These implants are typically made of silicone, and come in many different shapes and sizes.

Dr. Mosher often recommends chin augmentation utilizing nonsurgical techniques such as dermal and facial fillers or BELKYRA®, a nonsurgical option for patients who wish to reduce fat below the chin. It provides our patients to see the benefits of chin enhancement procedures, without the permanence of a chin implant.

Your Chin Augmentation Procedure

Typically, chin implant surgery is an outpatient procedure that can be performed under light general anesthesia or local anesthesia with sedation. Dr. Mosher makes the incision for your chin implant surgery either in the natural crease beneath the chin or inside the mouth at the junction of the gum and lower lip. He creates a pocket for the implant, inserts it in place, and closes the tiny incision with fine sutures. When the incision is made inside the mouth, there is no visible scarring. When the incision is made on the underside of the chin, the scar is practically undetectable.

If chin enhancement is being performed with dermal and facial fillers, results are seen immediately post treatment. Patients can expect moderate swelling and tenderness to their chin and jawline for 2-3 weeks. On occasion, bruising post injection can occur. At YES Medspa, Dr. Mosher and Dr. Lo have a specific pre and post-treatment protocol to help reduce risk of bruising.

Recovery and Results

After your chin augmentation surgery, you will experience some discomfort and swelling. Your ability to chew may be limited, so a liquid or soft food diet may be necessary for a few days following surgery. Most patients can return to work and light activities within 7 to 10 days, with full results emerging over the course of 4 to 6 weeks.

Results from chin enhancement using dermal and facial fillers typically last anywhere from 18-24 months. This allows our patients the option to see the results and outcome of their procedure without the permanence of surgery. Hyaluronic acid fillers can be dissolved with hyaluronidase, should patients wish to reduce their chin enhancement sooner than the expected lifespan of the dermal fillers.
