Breast Augmentation Revision

Print This Page

Breast augmentation is consistently one of the most popular cosmetic surgeries performed worldwide. Doctors have been performing breast augmentation with implants for decades, and most patients are happy with their surgical results. However, breast implants are not permanent medical devices, and even in patients who are satisfied with their initial outcome, they may eventually need to be replaced. Dr. Mathew Mosher specializes in revision surgery for women who require a secondary breast augmentation surgery in the Vancouver, British Columbia area.

For most of the women who visit Dr. Mosher near Vancouver, breast implant revision surgery is more involved than the initial breast augmentation procedure. Some of the considerations involved in revision surgery include the presence of scar tissue or silicone, altered chest wall anatomy, compromised skin elasticity, and minimizing scarring. It is important that you choose a surgeon who is skilled in the most up-to-date techniques in revision breast surgery, such as Dr. Mosher, to perform this specialized procedure. Whatever your reasons for seeking revision surgery, Dr. Mosher has the experience and training to create the beautiful results you desire.

Reasons for Replacing Breast Implants

A portion of women who undergo breast augmentation will eventually require revision breast surgery, typically for one of the following reasons:

Implant Rupture or Deflation

One of the main reasons for breast implant revision surgery is that one or both of the implants has lost volume due to leakage or rupture. In the case of silicone gel filled implants, a rupture is often detected during a mammogram, ultrasound, or MRI. Often, silicone gel filled implants may rupture or leak without immediately noticeable symptoms or shape changes, making regular screening an important practice. This is particularly important for women over the age of 40 or who have a family history of breast cancer. Saline filled implants will lose volume quickly in the instance of rupture, and the saline solution will be harmlessly absorbed by the body. The resulting breast asymmetry may make revision surgery a more immediate concern. Dr. Mosher may replace the ruptured implant with a comparable one, recommend temporary removal and staged re-augmentation, or you may choose to exchange both implants for a different type.

Unsatisfactory Surgical Result

Unfortunately, there are patients who have achieved unsatisfactory results with this surgery even when performed by experienced surgeons. Many factors can influence outcome and many of these factors are not within the control of the patient or their surgeon. Breast asymmetry, over or underinflated implants, unnatural placement, rippling or wrinkling are just some of the more frequent problems that are seen. Improved techniques and implants can minimize the risk of capsular contracture, reduce visible wrinkling and achieve more natural looking results. Dr. Mosher, a Fellow of the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada, is trained in the latest techniques for breast augmentation, which can improve the outcomes from revisional breast augmentation surgery and lower your risk of future problems.

Implant Exchange

Some breast augmentation patients will opt to have their implants removed in order to upgrade to a newer type of implant. Dr. Mosher routinely performs revision breast surgery for patients who want to "upgrade" to the newer, cohesive silicone gel or "gummy bear" implants. Sometimes women choose to exchange their breast implants at our Vancouver area centre because they would like to go larger or smaller with their breast size.

Eventual Sagging with Age

Even women who are very happy with the results of their breast augmentation will eventually experience some degree of sagging or drooping with age, just as occurs with natural breast tissue. Some women choose to have revision surgery which may include a breast lift to correct sagging (ptosis). They may also choose to change implant size or type at the time of their revision procedure.

You deserve to have the beautiful results that you expected from your initial breast augmentation. Whether you have experienced breast changes since your initial surgery, or you were unhappy with your initial results, Dr. Mosher can help you to achieve shapely, attractive and long-lasting results.

The Procedure

Revision breast augmentation surgery is more complicated than the initial procedure, and it's important to choose a Plastic Surgeon with experience performing these types of procedures. The techniques used during a breast augmentation revision depend on the specific reason a patient is seeking the surgery. One of the most common reasons for revision surgery is capsular contracture. This corrective surgery involves the release or removal of the scar tissue and replacing or removing the implants.

The results of breast augmentation revision surgery aren't as predictable as what you can expect after the initial enhancement procedure. That said, many patients are very satisfied with the outcome of revision procedures. A woman may choose revision breast augmentation to increase or decrease the size of her implants as her body and her goals change. More commonly, revisional breast augmentation surgery is done to improve unwanted outcomes such as implant malposition, visible rippling, scar contracture, asymmetries or sagging of one or both breasts.
