It’s natural to tread carefully when thinking about doing something big and transformative in life. Spontaneity has its place, but it’s best to be thoughtful about the moments that really change us. And so it is with breast augmentation with implants. At our Vancouver plastic surgery practice, nearly every one of my breast augmentation patients tells me the surgery has changed her life in some way—and that despite her initial reservations, it was absolutely worth it in the end.
If you’re reading this, it means you’re at least considering the procedure, although you may have some misgivings about it. I want to encourage you to take a moment to examine the reasons for hesitating and think them through a little more.
‘I’m Too Old to Get Breast Implants’
Let’s re-phrase that comment as a question: Are you too old to want to feel confident about your appearance?
To put it plainly: There is no age limit for breast augmentation surgery. If you are healthy enough for surgery, you may well be a great candidate for breast enhancement. Instead of thinking about your age, I would invite you to think about how today’s range of breast implants could help you look and feel great no matter your age. ‘My Friends Say Breast Augmentation Isn’t Right for Me’
If you’ve limited your research thus far to your friends’ opinions, it’s time to cast a wider net. I’ve had countless patients tell me that they were initially bombarded by advice from friends and family—and that quite a bit of it was coming from misinformed sources, at best.
Friends and family absolutely have a place in this process, and that place is to support you. When they do offer information, you should accept it — with a healthy dose of skepticism. Experienced, certified plastic surgeons are the experts; for a full, honest assessment of your eligibility for breast augmentation surgery, you should direct all of your questions to them. Especially the ones your friends and family have already answered.
‘I Need to Save Up for My Vacation Time’
This is a fair point—as long as it’s not an excuse to perpetually put off having surgery. More importantly, if vacation time is your only hesitation, it really shouldn’t be a deal-breaker.
I use a rapid recovery breast augmentation approach, which allows many of my patients to feel comfortable going out for dinner the day after their surgery. Patients can return to work within a few days if they feel up to it, although I certainly understand the desire to give yourself more time to recover in private.
‘I Need to Wait Until I’m Done Having Kids’
As with vacation time, this one is entirely your prerogative. The underlying concern here is an example of misinformation, though.
Many women take it for granted that if they intend to breastfeed future children, breast augmentation is simply not an option. That’s not true. I prefer and recommend an incision that avoids the nipple entirely. I make short incisions (less than 2 inches in most patients) under the breast and avoid trauma to the structures that produce and deliver breast milk. This also minimizes your risk of sensation loss, infection, and scar tissue surrounding the implant. Each of these benefits has been backed up by reliable research, and a recent study published in the Aesthetic Surgery Journal found that the majority of women with implants were able to breastfeed their babies without complications. I feel that it is my role to know these details and share them with my patients.
At the end of the day, it’s about separating your objections from the core question here: Do you really want to have the procedure?
